Silent Protests at Western Carolina University

Image
Students today gather around the fountain at the center of Western Carolina University to protest the death of Mahsa Amini. "Gov. bans on women's bodies is tyranny  the personal is political" 4 weeks ago, Mahsa Amini was killed in Iranian custody after violating the country's hijab and modesty laws. The 22 year old was taken into custody for wearing her hijab "too loosely." In 1979, the Islamic Republic of Iran was established and created a new law requiring all women to wear hijabs that cover their face and neck as well as their hair. Amini is not the only casualty that has recently occured in Iran. Over 185 civilians, including 19 children, have been killed by the Iranian government.  In the name of Amini, as well as others, young Iranians have taken to the street to protest control over bodily autonomy as a human right, as well as the countless unjustified deaths and violence on the streets. The protesters in Iran have been met with riot police, arrests,

European Union makes USB-C the "common port." What does this mean for America?

On October 4, 2022 the European Union just signed a new law requiring all devices to utilize a USB-C charging cable by 2024 in an attempt to reduce electronic waste and allow sustainable tech shopping. The new law calling for a "universal charger" has not yet entered the EU official journal, but has officially been signed. After taking years to argue, the law was finally approved with 206 voting in favor, 13 against, and 8 abstentions. Once added to the official journal, tech companies will have 24 months to make the change. Any devices sold without the port before this two year window will still be allowed on the market without changing.   The law will require devices such as phones, tablets, digital cameras and other accessories to have access to a USB-C port by 2024 and laptops by 2026. Accessories such as smart watches, health trackers and some sports equipment that are too small for this port are exempt from the law. The law was originally proposed in 2018, when it was v

Fake Research Undoes 12 Years of Alzheimer's Treatment Research

Science Magazine discovered evidence on Thursday of image editing affecting the results of an influential Alzheimer's study from 2006. Allegations of photos being doctored began last year when Dr. Matthew Schrag at Vanderbilt University questioned the validity of the images used in a famous study of the A𝛽*56 protein or amyloid beta star 56. This protein was discovered by Sylvian Lesné, a neuroscientist and professor at the University of Minnesota. It is a sub-protein of the amyloid beta protein that causes Alzheimer's by forming sticky plaques on the brain. Lesné contributed most of the memory loss in the disease to his sub-protein and spent years trying to find a treatment within a specific assembly of different proteins. After Science Magazine's 6-month investigation, 20 papers published by Lesné in the science academic journal Nature have been considered "suspect." It is also believed he has doctored over 70 images. Many scientists began to question his work

Pope Francis apologizes for Christian influence in indigenous Canadian schools

The 85-year-old Pope is touring Canada and visiting schools of the First Nations to apologize for the injustices of Catholic residential schools and the intergenerational trauma caused by them. This tour began Monday at two schools for the Metis and Inuit people. This series of apologies began at the Vatican in March after Nathan Obed, national Inuit leader, came to ask the Pope to apologize. After arriving, the Pope and Obed met privately, then met with two First Nations delegates. At these meetings, Obed invited the Pope to visit the schools while he was in Canada. Obed has also planned to ask that justice be served to the Catholic residential school workers that are still living. There has been no confirmation whether this request has been made yet. When the Pope arrived, he was greeted as a chief by Indigenous leaders who were dressed in eagle feather warheads. They began celebrating with traditional music and dancing. During his address, Pope Francis asked for forgiveness for the
